Mr. Gotthardt, State Secretary in the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, took the time to get to know our company and asked insightful questions. In discussions with CEO Christian Brandmüller and authorized officer Cornelia Hofmann, important topics such as renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and skilled workers abroad were thoroughly discussed.

During the company presentation and a tour, we were able to highlight Spangler’s capabilities in automation and digitalization.

An evening of appreciation and exchange

In the stylish setting of the König Ludwig restaurant, the evening provided the perfect opportunity for invited guests from various industries to exchange ideas and network in a relaxed and exclusive atmosphere. The diversity of the participants reflected Spangler’s broad industry coverage, which led to stimulating conversations and new perspectives.

Pleasure, networking and fun

The evening was not only an opportunity for networking, but also for savouring. Over Bavarian delicacies and freshly tapped beer, the guests were able to exchange ideas as part of the VIP event, with fun clearly taking centre stage and a relaxed atmosphere throughout.

An entertaining competition, in which participants had to estimate the weight of several copper rails, led to lively discussions and speculation. The winner’s estimate was only 116g off the actual weight of 9916g. Two further prizes went to the runners-up, whose estimates were also impressively close to the actual weight.

The Spangler team would like to thank the 140 guests for their visit and the enjoyable and successful evening together.

Spangler is an UL-listed manufacturer of control systems and thus certified, to produce plants for the North American market. A regular inspection by UL Germany guarantees a consistently high standard based on current standards.

Control cabinet construction according to UL508A

The UL508A is the relevant standard for the construction of control cabinets in North America (Industrial Control Panels). This differs fundamentally from the widely used IEC standard, as not only the plant, but also the production process is checked.  For the installation of a plant the acceptance by the AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) is necessary. Besides control cabinets for General Use, Spangler mainly designs controls for Industrial Machinery where the NFPA79 Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery is observed as, in addition to UL508A, there are other requirements such as door locking.

Control cabinet construction in Ex-area according to UL698A

With application in explosion-proof areas (hazardous locations), special requirements according to UL698A must be for risk avoidance. As only one of few companies in Germany, Spangler holds the extended certification and the know how to produce control cabinets for control systems of plant parts in the Ex-area.

On-site acceptance

In North America it is required by law that the local responsible authority AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) carries out the on-site acceptance whereas in countries like in South America, the Middle East or in Asia the requirements are from the customers themselves. By marking the control cabinets with UL-listed labels, Spangler ensures a smooth process of inspection and thus avoids any delays with start-up. Spangler has nearly 20 years of experience with planning, production, certification and documentation of control systems for the North American market and offers further support with electrical planning.

Three Spangler UL specialists have concluded the MTR test (Manufacturer Technical Representative) at UL Germany and regularly take part in trainings. The examination must be repeated every three years. In this way, Spangler can guarantee consistently high quality. The specialists have already designed and produced many control systems – like for example hydrogen filling stations in the USA or sewage treatment plants in the Middle East – in accordance with UL standard.

Bavaria´s Foreign Trade struggles with high energy prices, disrupted supply chains, material shortages and increased trade barriers.

This is opposed by the partners of the Roadshow International touring through Bavaria – Chambers of Crafts, Chambers of Industry and Commerce, Bavarian Ministry of Economics, Bavaria International – practical advice and funding opportunities when entering the market in new countries. At the event in the middle of April, organised by the Chamber of Crafts Lower Bavaria-Upper Palatinate in cooperation with the Chamber of Industry and Commerce Regensburg, they informed interested entrepreneurs with stands and lectures on international business.

During the event, experienced foreign traders gave an insight into their current course books for international waters. As one of the speakers at this event, our managing director Christian Brandmüller was able to share his knowledge of trade relations abroad. In a very successful contribution experience and interesting facts about trade relations were passed on. The participants of the region Lower Bavaria and Upper Palatinate were able to get an insight into cross-border trade.

On both days the focus of the event is on practice-oriented lectures and a trade exhibition with numerous well-known manufacturers and companies from the drinking water sector.

This year’s neighbourhood day took place in Riedenburg, to which Franz Achhammer, Deputy Head of Sales at Spangler, was invited as one of the speakers. He informed about the extensive services within the framework of the implementation of a process control system from Spangler, which range from consulting, planning and production to commissioning and the following service.

Besides the many years of cooperation with the waterworks in Riedenburg, Achhammer also presented topics such as flow monitoring, Spangler’s twice-yearly shaft entry training and the preparation of waterworks for a possible emergency power supply. The latter topic was well received by the participants. Spangler has many years of know-how in this area, takes care of the correct design of the system and provides support with the necessary emergency power tests.

Finally, the speakers and participants were able to visit the floodgate and the power plant in Riedenburg Haidhof together.

The entire SPANGLER Team thanked the more than 150 guests for coming and the pleasant evening together.

Some impressions of the evening: 

Anyone who works in enclosed rooms of waste water treatment plants may be exposed to many underestimated hazards. These must be identified at an early stage so that accidents do not occur at all. From the equipment to entry protection and hazards from gases or oxygen deficiency – in order to ensure our employees‘ safety, Spangler regularly carries out safety trainings.

Its customers, like for example staff at sewage treatment plants, as well are faced with these challenges and must yearly take part in a training in order to be allowed to carry out necessary work in shafts for example. This led to the idea to invite the customers for this safety training.

Safety training ‘Access in enclosed rooms of waste water treatment plants’

In cooperation with the company Krapp Technologie from Hilpoltstein, which has been a partner as regards safety trainings for Spangler for long time, this professional training was organized.

Mr Krapp explained and showed with practical exercises the correct use of protection and rescue equipment. On the one hand in order to avoid accidents, on the other hand to quickly and safely react in the case of a fall, injury or rescue.  Particularly interesting for works at the sewage treatment plant was the proactive approach at work in hazardous atmospheres. The right handling of measuring devices for the free release measurement in case of gas hazards, like Ex-Methane, carbon dioxide/carbon monoxide or the measurement of the oxygen content is lifesaving. Not least, Mr Krapp also emphasized the responsibility of every person involved as regards the right application of devices, the correct use of safety equipment as well as the check of the site of operation. Basically, workers who are well prepared and trained and who use the right, intact equipment, can avoid many dangers.

Personal exchange of experience

During the lunch together and the subsequent tour of the company, the first feedback could be obtained.   “It is similar to First Aid courses. Even if you have done these courses before – you nevertheless forget important procedures again and again “, was many customers’ feedback “Today I was made aware of many risks again. In everyday life you tend to ignore them “, another participant explained. “The safety with working in enclosed rooms is of high priority for us, as our employees and customers are regularly confronted with it “, explained Andreas Amler, Service Manager and organizer of this training. “Therefore, we are glad to offer these safety trainings and that the response was very positive “, Amler continued. Impressions of the latest training in spring 2022

The Software SPANGLER Electronic Material Request, short SEMA, has already facilitated our goods logistics for some years. We have now completed the software by the SEMA App to enable our electricians on the installation site to have access to our material supply. The development took about four months; currently our employees are testing the app in the operative application.

The handling is very simple: when required only the QR code of the material needed is scanned; the same applies for all other order data, such as place of delivery or project number. After that, the delivery is initiated per e-mail or via VPN (via W-Lan). „The limited process steps reduce the error rate and make the order process quick and safe, “ says programmer Daniel Rengnath. Furthermore, all data are archived and can be retrieved as often as required.

Currently Spangler is working on a SEMA App for Windows tablets to make it usable for manufacturing employees as well. „In the medium-term, we would like to handle the inventory of our assembly material via this app, too. “, the programmer looks further into the future. A welcome side effect: the Spangler Team has intensely dealt with the MAUI-platform in this connection.
This is a code base for the programming of the app, which is used for all mobile operation systems, such as Android, Apple IOS or even for MacOS. This is another advantage for our customers who we can offer the programming of apps and QR codes with the latest state of the art.

As part of a tour through the Neumarkt district, IHK President Mr. Michael Matt and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Jürgen Helmes paid a visit to Spangler. They were accompanied by Silke Auer, Managing Director of the IHK office in Neumarkt, and Ursula Hammerbacher, Chairwoman of the IHK Committee Neumarkt. At Spangler, the guests were given a company tour  through the newly constructed office and production building and received information about the Töging family business.

“The Chambers of Industry and Commerce in Germany, like the Chambers of Crafts, are on the one hand our voice for the economy, and on the other hand, accelerators for trends and important networkers,” explained Managing Director Tina Lambert about the relationship. “In many areas, we benefit from the networks and expertise of the chambers. That’s why we are even more pleased when we can directly present our suggestions and wishes to the top representatives of the IHK.”

The IHK Regensburg for Upper Palatinate / Kelheim represents a total of 84,000 companies in the region to both politics and society.

We look back on our first online live lecture on the subject of ‘Virtual start-up‘ with great satisfaction. We decided to go this electronic way as the long-lasting Corona restrictions have made it difficult to visit our customers. Martin Müller and Robert Heislbetz gave a presentation to the nearly 30 connected customers via webinar. The focus was on the numerous additional benefits that can be realized with a virtual start-up.

Virtuality brings real added value

In the webinar the project planning of a digital twin for plants as well as the advantages of the virtual start-up were explained. The main focus was on the testing phase between PLC control and systems engineering which can be carried out even before the assembly of the plant. This enables early detection of conspicuous features and early optimisation of process procedures. Furthermore, the experts went into detail as regards the possibility to reproduce control processes as well as safety programmes like for example safety interlocks and shutdown matrices, via the real time capable core of the simulation computer. Requirements, which result from a functional specification sheet and may arise only months after start-up, can also be shown in that way.

From theory to practice

By means of a customer’s project from the automobile sector, the experience and the suitability for daily use were shown. In this case it is a retrofit of an existing plant with three big production lines for the galvanisation technology.

The plant was to be equipped with a new control technology and connected with the ERP system, without shutting down the whole plant and with minimum standstill time. Taking this into consideration, Spangler offered a line-for-line retrofit, planned and simulated before by a virtual start-up. For the implementation, a detailed ‚digital twin‘ was designed. The simulations were connected to a failsafe PLC in order to realistically reconstruct production conditions. Thus, the process sequence could be tested thoroughly and adjusted accordingly. Even before the physical start-up, optimisation of the plant process and training of the operators took place. The result was a successful retrofit with a minimum start-up period as required by the customer.

Martin Müller, Sales Manager, sums up the primary additional benefit of the virtual start-up: ‚We achieve a calculable competitive advantage for our customers due to increased planning and project planning reliability as well as due to clearly reduced costs for resources and personnel. Because of the early planning optimisation of the processes not only a smaller time frame for the start-up is required, but also the base for long-term stable production is created. We see a clear potential for the future. This is the reason why we will continue to invest in this service for our customers.
